Owl Coloring Pages

Owls have featured in many different children’s storybooks, most of the time being referred to as the wisest of animals. So the question arises, are owls actually wise? Some studies have found that owls actually practice a primitive form of tool use.

Burrowing owls, for example, have been observed using animal dung to lure dung beetles to their burrows, where they subsequently feast on the bugs. While owls are amazing animals in their own right, in real life they aren’t considered to be amongst the wisest of creatures.  So where did the myth of their wisdom come from?

Apparently, it originated with legends of the Ancient Greek goddess Athena. The goddess of wisdom,

Athena was often portrayed in art holding an owl, or described in literary works as “owl-eyed” or even “owl-faced.”
